Choosing a Kitchen Design That Works Well For Your Family
Designing or redesigning a kitchen that works for you and your family
is different than preparing a kitchen for the sale of your home. Before
you invest your time and money in a total redesign, renovation or simply
a redecoration, determine the end result you are looking for. If you
plan on staying in your home for ten years of more, design the kitchen
specifically for you and your family!
Some of the major things to remember in any kitchen design are:
♦ the shape and function level of the kitchen,
♦ the style of your home and other furnishings within your home (for
example you would not want a traditional country kitchen if the rest of
your house is sleek and contemporary),
♦ colours and materials that inspire you, and last but not least,
♦ what style of appliances will suite your needs the best.
The shape of your kitchen can limit what you are going to do in your
renovations. If you would like to have a center island and you have a
galley style kitchen, without removing walls or adding additional space,
this would not be possible. Therefore, when you decide what you want to
do with your new kitchen space, make sure you are aware of the
limitations of the space as well as the costs associated with moving
walls or adding space.
There are endless possibilities for kitchen design. Your kitchen is an
integral part of your home life. Make it as comfortable as possible
without clashing with the rest of your house. You want your kitchen to
flow with the house, not stick out like a sore thumb. If your house is
sleek and contemporary, you may want to look at hardwood or larger sized
tile for the floors and granite, marble or stainless steel for the
benchtops.
Never be afraid of colour. The colours you choose for your walls,
floors, benchtops, cabinetry and splashbacks are not only numerous, they
are critical! The wrong colour choice for your walls is an easy fix -
simply repaint. However, if you get colours that clash by choosing
conflicting colour schemes in your floor, benchtop and splashback tiles,
the mistakes are costly and frequently difficult to repair.
Using more neutral tones for benchtops, splashbacks and cabinetry easily
fit into any overall colour scenario. They also make it easier to
decorate during holidays, birthdays or the various seasons if the mood
strikes. It is much less expensive to change out towels and window
treatments as the seasons change than it is to change the permanent
structures.
Just remember that whatever you decide to do, this is your home. The
kitchen is the heartbeat of the family home. Personalize it, make it
comfortable and make it a place that you want to spend time in. |
