Advice on Choosing Kitchen Sinks and Cabinets
When redecorating or renovating your kitchen, your sink and cabinet
choices can be more overwhelming than flooring and benchtop choices.
Cabinetry is actually a little easier if you have already chosen your
flooring, benchtops and paint colours.
While visiting the various cabinetry sites take along a swatch or
samples of the choices you have already made. This will ensure that
colours blend well or match perfectly (depending on your tastes). You do
not want to choose honey maple tone for the cabinets if you have chosen
yellow paint or dark wood tone floors. The colour of the cabinets would
disappear into the paint of the walls and not go with the floors at all.
By taking samples of the floor, wall and benchtop colours along with you
to pick the cabinetry, you will ensure that the tones are perfect for
your kitchen. Then you only have to decide on the style. There are
hundreds of styles of cabinets. Think of the overall style of the house.
Is it a bungalow, cottage, historic villa, or ultra modern design?
Whatever style the overall architecture of the house will make it easier
to determine what will and will not work in your new kitchen. You never
want your kitchen to be out of sync with the rest of the house.
About your sink or sinks – depending on style of the kitchen. You will
need to make a final decision about your sink before you order or have
your benchtops made or installed. This is especially true if you are
having custom benchtops or those cut from a stone material. The exact
measurements of your sink must be given to the person or company making
your benchtops.
Do you have a traditional Italian style kitchen, where a lot of pasta is
cooked? If so you want to have a deep sink, possibly even a custom pasta
sink and faucet right next to the sink – in addition to the sink you use
to wash your vegetables and dishes.
If your kitchen is more country in style, maybe a single sink with deep
bib on the front made of ceramic or concrete will fit better in the
design. Kitchen sinks are a critical component to any functional
kitchen. Having a shallow sink may be wonderful for cleaning fruits and
vegetables, but it is horrible for washing deep pasta or lobster pots.
The decision regarding a garbage disposal must be considered as well.
Some sink styles are not conducive to adding a garbage disposal, such as
single sinks. A garbage disposal cannot be attached to the primary water
drain in a sink – which is why they are always attached to the secondary
side of a double sink.
Take time to do a little research. Plan your kitchen out carefully
before you make the first purchase. Talk to the professionals who
design, sell and install these items before you make a final decision. |
